Australian School-based Apprenticeships
Australian School-based Apprenticeships allow students to work towards a nationally recognised qualification while completing their high school studies and must be endorsed by the school.
The student must enter into an Apprenticeship Training Contract with an employer (and a parent/guardian if the student is under the age of 18 years). This contract is a legally binding contract for the duration of that contract. The same terms, conditions, rights and obligations apply as with all other traineeships or apprenticeships.

Benefits for employers
The advantages of taking on a school-based apprentice include:
- an injection of youth and enthusiasm
- making a valuable contribution to the community by developing a young person and improving their self esteem
- participating in nationally recognised training
- advancing and cultivating staff with up to date industry knowledge
- the opportunity for future fulltime employment of suitable students
- students beginning apprenticeships and completing their SACE are more likely to see their apprenticeship through.
ATC Benefits for employers:
- block release i.e. you can have the student apprentice for 4-5 weeks in one go and even longer in their second year (Year 12) rather than one day per week.
- regular visits by the student’s mentor (case manager). The mentor can sort out any issues, advice, and suggestions for help or further training.
- extra training and skills BEFORE they start work i.e. Greencard, work ready courses, work experience, forklift etc
- school work completed by student is related to industry. When not at work they are still involved in industry related courses and programs.
- Small business and finance training.
Unlike other apprentices, school-based participants:
- are not paid for the time spent undertaking training delivered by the Registered Training Organisation
